Reasons for an energy management policy

There are several reasons why a company benefits from the integration or adoption of a formal, written energy management policy.

A clear statement will give a sense of purpose, enhancing your chances of success. Senior management can judge the performance of its strategy against an agreed set of targets. Energy reduction matters are more likely to be understood and accepted throughout a company if they have the support of senior management. Activities will be more successful if adequate resources are allocated to energy management. It is an opportunity to put in writing the responsibilities and accountabilities for energy consumed by the company. An energy management policy establishes an overall sense of direction. It sets goals regarding the level of energy responsibility and performance required by the department/agency, against which all subsequent actions will be judged. If the department/agency's commitment to energy reduction is left to operate on an unofficial basis, it can be derailed or its impact lessened by changes in management personnel or energy management staff. A written energy management policy will safeguard your department/agency's decision to manage energy consumption.
