The Greenhouse Calculator, developed by EPA Victoria, is a computerised scorecard that enables people to calculate greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs for their own homes and to identify potential savings. It is available on the web at www.epa.vic.gov.au/GreenhouseCalculator. The Australian Greenhouse Calculator also contains: - a reference section that provides extensive information about the enhanced greenhouse effect and air pollution in general
- animations of major scientific ideas to help students understand the mechanisms of key natural phenomena
- a range of Teaching Activities that cater for students in Years 5 - 10 with a range of learning abilities and styles.
The Australian Greenhouse Calculator CD-ROM is available from CSIRO Publishing, PO Box 1139, Collingwood, 3066, (www.publish.csiro.au). The CD-ROM was sent to all secondary schools in 2002. Further enquiries can be made at the Department of Sustainability and Environment's Customer Service Centre, see below. The Australian Greenhouse Calculator Activity Book has been produced to complement the CD-ROM. Its purpose is to make the teaching materials on the Australian Greenhouse Calculator CD more easily accessible to teachers and their students. It contains three examples of teaching units and a selection of work-sheets that could be used in the classroom. A pdf version of the Activity Book is available at www.greenhouse.vic.gov.au via the Australian Greenhouse Calculator link on the home page. Additional copies can be obtained free of charge from the Department of Sustainability and Environment's Customer Service Centre, phone 136 186.
