The Department for Victorian Communities (DVC) has reduced its energy use by 17.3% since embarking on a program of environmental initiatives and raising staff awareness.

Located at 1 Spring Street Melbourne, DVC has put in place an Environment Management System to help cut energy consumption by 15% to meet the government's required energy target by 30 June 2006.

A series of energy audits in 2004 identified that energy could be saved by delamping office areas, adjusting lighting operating hours and raising staff awareness about efficient energy use.

Fine tuning of lighting operating hours in DVC's office resulted in energy savings of 70,981MJ, including 24 tonnes of greenhouse gases per annum.

A delamping program created savings of 80,500Kwh per year and annual financial savings of more than $4,000 per annum.

DVC is continuing with programs to raise staff awareness and change behaviour by encouraging better energy management practices across all sites.
