The Arthur Rylah Institute in Heidelberg is a leading centre for applied ecological research with an emphasis on flora, fauna and biodiversity issues.
This example of the Department of Sustainability and Environment's (DSE) energy management shows how energy use can be reduced cost-effectively.
An energy audit carried out in March 2003 identified energy saving opportunities (see inset table). Total cost for these initiatives was estimated at $38,100, with an anticipated payback period of three years. Improvements made include installation of low-energy lighting and motion-activated office lighting, and upgrades to air conditioning controls and timers and the main building boiler controls.
