The Equal Opportunity Commission (EOC) has introduced several energy saving measures to meet the Government Sustainable Energy Target of a 15% reduction in energy use by June 2006.
In the first four months since these projects began at 380 Lonsdale Street Melbourne, the EOC has measured an 11% reduction in annual energy use. This figure is expected to increase to 25% when the impacts of the energy saving actions are measured for an entire year. The EOC's energy saving measures include:
Delamping - Removal of a number of fluorescent tubes has created an energy saving of 13.1 GJ each year.
- Reducing wattage of downlight globes from 50W to 35W. EOC will save 1.2 GJ each year by replacing just 10 50W downlights with 35W globes.
Switching off computers at night (behavioural change)
- EOC can realise savings of up to 62.7 GJ each year for 50 computers by making sure staff switch off computers at night, especially on Fridays and before public holidays. Of all the energy saving measures put in place this has achieved the greatest energy savings with no cost required – just reminders to all staff to switch off at night.
Fitting downlights with fluorescent lamps
- A total of 38 downlights were replaced with fluoro lamps, saving the EOC 26.6 GJ energy each year.
These energy actions have resulted in an annual saving of 103.55 GJ. Contact for more information
