Victoria Police - variable speed drives for the world trade centre PDF Print E-mail

By installing new technology at the Victoria Police Centre at the World Trade Centre on Flinders Street, Victoria Police has saved 28% on electricity consumption and $21,000 in just two months.

The World Trade Centre was built in the 1980s and has been occupied by Victoria Police for the past 10 years. Half of the 21,800 square metre building operates 24 hours a day.

The building has a variable volume air conditioning system that originally had inlet guide vane dampers. These dampers have been replaced by ten variable speed drives (VSDs) ranging in power from 30 to 100 kW.

As a result Victoria Police saved 28% on electricity consumption or 200,000 kWhs/month for September and October, with cost savings of $10,500 per month.

The new technology cost $140,000 to install and is expected to save $120,000 in energy over a year.

The VSDs were supplied by Danfoss of Denmark and installed by Honeywell, the comprehensive maintenance contractor for the World Trade Centre.
